Give cold callers the cold shoulder…

Cold Callers the Cold shoulder

We want you to feel safe in your home and not have to worry about any unwanted visitors or callers. However, with scams on the rise and fraudsters targeting people through phone calls, doorstep visits, emails and text messages, being extra vigilant and aware of these scams can help protect you and your family from falling victim

Over the phone

Fraudsters often act as organisations like banks or government agencies, claiming there’s an urgent issue such as unpaid taxes or a problem with your account. Their aim is for you to share personal information, like passwords or bank details. Never provide personal information over the phone. If you're unsure, hang up and call the company back using a verified number.

They also use text messages asking you to call a number or click on a link – only do this if you know the person sending you the message and if unsure, delete the message especially if they aren’t saved in your contacts.

You can register to stop unwanted calls with the Telephone Preference Service (TPS). They are the UK’s only official ‘Do Not Call’ register for landline and mobile numbers. It allows you to opt out of unsolicited live sales and marketing calls.

It’s free and quick to register a number, here’s how you can do it:

Simply text TPS and your email address to 85095 from your mobile phone or visit the TPS website –  www.tpsonline.org.uk and register from there.

On your doorstep

Scammers may knock on your door pretending to be from utility companies, offering services, or collecting for charity. These fraudsters use high-pressure tactics to enter your home or request money. Always ask for ID and call the company to verify the person’s identity.

Magenta colleagues will always carry their ID badge, and you can request to see it at any time. Some colleagues will also wear clothing showing the Magenta logo. We will mostly make appointments with you by phone or by letter. We won’t cold call you unless it’s an emergency.  We will never ask you to pay for anything on your doorstep and you should never hand over cash to anyone unless this has been pre-arranged.   We do work with contractors but we will notify you of who they are prior to them arriving at your home. They will never ask you for money to complete repairs.

If you are  worried, please call us on 0808 100 9596 and we can support you further or in an emergency always contact the Police.

In your Inbox

Email fraud typically involves phishing, where scammers send emails that look like they’re from trusted companies. They may ask you to reset your password or verify personal information. Clicking on links in these emails can lead to fake websites designed to steal your details. Always access websites by typing the website address URL directly into your browser, and never click on suspicious links.

If you suspect any kind of scam, disengage, report it, and inform your bank or local authorities. Staying alert and double-checking unexpected requests can help protect you from fraud.

Remember, if something feels wrong, it probably is.
