St Anne Street Spring Clean

Birkenhead First's Town Hosts together with Magenta Living and other local partners have delivered a much-needed spring clean to the shopping area in the Business Improvement District (BID).

Working with Wirral Council, Biffa, Merseyside Police and the town hosts, Magenta Living helped clean-up St Anne Street/Birchwood Avenue retail area which is home to a parade of shops and businesses.

The clean-up was organised after Birkenhead First's town hosts spoke to the businesses and residents, who complained about fly-tipping, rubbish and anti-social behaviour in the area.  So the Town Hosts contacted local partners and a special environmental day was arranged with partners, including Magenta Living's Environmental Services team.

Ahead of the clean-up, the town hosts distributed leaflets informing local businesses and residents of the operation and how they could help.

Wirral Council and Biffa delivered skips for the disposal of residents' unwanted household items on the day and provided details of organisations able to remove items unsuitable for skips.

Wirral Council's recycling team were on hand to offer recycling information and advice, while the Council’s environmental team removed fly-tipped items and cleansed local alleyways.  The neighbourhood crew from Biffa removed any bulky fly-tipped items.

Merseyside Police's anti-social behaviour team erected a mobile police station and talked to residents and businesses about tackling the issue.

Paula Basnett, CEO for Wirral Chamber of Commerce, says: "The St Anne Street initiative demonstrated quite clearly the growing partnership of organisations which are determined to have a lasting and effective impact on Birkenhead.  The residents and businesses within this area were very positive about the clean up and it is through their encouragement that Birkenhead First and its partners will continue supporting the community in making Birkenhead a cleaner, safer and vibrant place to live and to work.”

Councillor Jean Stapleton, who joined in with the clean-up operation on the day, says: “I was very happy to join the environmental day in St. Anne Street.  Wirral Council and the Birkenhead First Town Hosts did a magnificent job supervising the clean-up and removing rubbish.  Great litter-picking work was also done by the Probation Payback Team.  Thanks to everyone who took part.
