Supporting #StartsAtHome Day
We’re supporting #Starts At Home Day, the National Housing Federation’s campaign for supported housing.
The aim of Starts at Home Day is a chance to celebrate the positive impact of supported housing on our communities across the country, and to ensure supported housing is recognised as an invaluable part of the housing, health, social care and criminal justice systems.
Without a long-term plan for supported housing, thousands of people could go without the support they need, costing the public purse and leaving people who could live independently with support facing long stays in residential or institutional care, or at risk of homelessness. We want to celebrate the value of care and support services and how having a safe and secure place to call home, can really make a big difference to people’s lives.
Supporting the campaign, our Chief Executive, Debi Marriott-Lavery said: “Homes are places of stability and hope. Our commitment is to create homes full of love and communities full of life, opening-up a world of possibilities. It’s simply about doing the right thing.”
We provide support to around 1,700 customers through our various supported schemes, including three extra care schemes, sheltered and supported accommodation mainly for those aged over 55. Through the ‘Our House’ trio and Manor Road scheme, they provide much needed support to young women and their children to learn independent living skills. A great example of how important this support is, here is Georgia’s story:
Georgia moved into Our House with her 2-year-old and 3-month old baby. She has been working with the team and preparing to move into a bungalow at First Base. This will provide the ability to live more independently with her children. The next steps after that is for Georgia to hopefully move into her own home with Magenta.
Georgia said: “The best thing about Our House is the support offered, I can’t wait to be moving to First Base and onto the next steps of support around me. To have more space for me and the children will be a massive help.”
Part of the support offered includes holding regular sessions such as costs of running their own home to ensure they are ready to take their next steps when moving on.
Another resident, a carer who has been living at Our House for a few months with her baby said: “It has given me a break from being a carer and allowed more freedom and independence.”
